Buying Tires for Your 4×4
October 19th, 2008 by Justin
For 4 x 4 enthusiasts, one of the most important accessory (or necessity if you think about it) are your tires. It’s incredible to think that only a few square inches of rubber is all that separates a few thousand pounds of metal from the dirt. For most 4 x 4 enthusiasts picking the right tires is paramount for enjoying the trails. Here are some tips on choosing the best tires for your vehicle.
Your Driving Tastes
Before we get into the obvious of choosing tires that fit your make and model, it is also important to first consider what kind of driving you mostly would like to do with your 4×4. Do you drive on tough trails, gravel, sand, very harsh terrain or do you mostly hit the pavement with an occasional detour on a nicely manicured dirt path. Depending on your driving will ultimately determine if you are satisfied with your tires.
Aggressive Treads
Obviously, treads for 4×4 vehicles are extremely important. There are a wide variety of treads that work well for all different types of terrain and choosing a style that fits your driving will help you optimize performance. It should be noted that while very aggressive tread patterns look attractive they don’t necessarily give you the best control and drivability you seek. Talk to your tire professional regarding which type of terrain each tire tread is engineered for.
Handling, Load Carrying and Plus Size Tires
Besides tread, another important consideration to make is the type of handling you are looking for- whether you want sharp turning characteristics, more stability, etc). Also consider the type of load you are carrying, this point is especially important to SUV and pick up truck owners. Regarding plus size tires, keep in mind what your original manufacturer recommends. Experts recommend that you do not exceed your OEM’s specifications by more than 3%.
