4×4 Accessories for Off Roading

February 15th, 2009 by Justin

Are you a 4×4 off roading enthusiast?  If you are, you probably like to hit the trails or the sand as much as you can.  And while off roading is usually fun and requires just a decent vehicle, there are plenty of ways to enhance your experience.  One way is with 4×4 accessories made for off roading.  Here are just a few of them.

Offroad Accessories

Tire Deflators/Inflators
If you drive your vehicle on the beach or in sandy areas, one of the things you need to be concerned about is traction.  Unfortunately, a vehicle with its tires at the proper psi for tires on the road will usually have lousy traction once on the sand.  To increase traction, you need more surface area and this is done letting out the air in your tires.  So the perfect accessory for doing this fast and efficiently is a tire deflator- a deflator removes air from a tire in about 5 minutes or less and a tire inflator- or air compressor will fill your tires back with air and ready for the road going home.

Brush Guards
If you are hitting the trails, you will probably come across plenty of brush.  There will be tree branches, weeds and bushes all over the place.  If you own a truck, Jeep or SUV, you want to protect your front as well as the side of your vehicle- the best way to accomplish this is with a brush guard.  Brush guards come in quite a few different configurations, such as if you are driving mainly in the desert or if you are hitting jungle trails.  Each make and model is different, however there are a few that fit universally.  For those conscious of their lighting, there are also lighting guards and covers to protect your fog lights, trail lights, etc from brush, as well as debris.

Caring for Your Truck Liftgate

February 13th, 2009 by Justin

If you own a truck or SUV, you have a liftgate.  Liftgates are just a fancy term used to call the door or hatch that protects your cargo from falling out onto the road.  However, since many 4×4 owners utilize their liftgates much more often than one would a trunk, many liftgates over time require maintenance.

Truck Liftgate

Here are some tips.

Heavy Duty Trucks Does Not Equal Heavy Duty Liftgates
It should be noted that on many 4×4 trucks and SUV’s, your liftgate exterior might be heavy duty, but the inner workings such as the latch may be the same materials made on the manufacturer’s compact car.  This means that with wear and tear, one of the main problems that occur with 4×4 owners is the locking or latching mechanism breaking down.  It only takes a few 2×4 pieces of wood to slam into your liftgate to cause major shock to a locking or latching mechanism.  You will know you broke something when you hear a piece of plastic or metal rattling around your liftgate when you shake it or hit a bump.

If you broke your latch or key mechanism, most 4×4 manufacturers sell the part to fix it.  You will be happy to know it is usually under $10 and it’s so cheap due to the fact that it is used on practically all of their doors.

If you use your liftgate very often carrying heavy loads, you might want replace the liftgate with a heavy duty replacement or even a rubber netting that requires no key and can be easily installed or removed.  There are plenty of after market options when it comes to liftgates and for most truck owners customizing a liftgate can add style to your vehicle.

Theft Protection for Your Vehicle

January 29th, 2009 by Justin

For many truck, SUV and Jeep owners keeping your vehicle safe and protected from thieves and vandalism is of utmost importance.  However, since these vehicles are always in demand, the chances are many 4×4 vehicle owners will experience theft and vandalism.  Here are a few ways to reduce the risk and add some extra protection.

Many times professional thieves look for vehicles that are easy targets- such as vehicles that are parked where there is limited lighting, trucks with their doors unlocked, etc.  Make sure you take care where you leave your car parked and that you obviously leave your doors locked.  In addition, add some easy to view theft deterrents such as steering wheel locks or large badging that warns of an alarm system.  In addition, if you have an expensive stereo, look for ways to conceal the unit when not in use- such as removing the head unit or face plate and covering up any sub woofers or amplifiers.

Lo-Jack, GPS Devices
Many newer cars now come equipped with Lo-Jack or other GPS navigation devices that can send a signal to the police department or other agency to not only inform them that your vehicle has been stolen, but to alert them exactly where the vehicle is.  Many times, a truck can be remotely shut off rendering it useless to a thief or it can give off its location so a police officer can be dispatched.

High Tech Alarm Systems
While general alarm systems are a good deterrent, newer models can call your phone when they are unauthorized to start.  In addition, these alarm system can be easily activated to shut off the ignition rendering the vehicle useless and also contact the authorities so that a police officer can apprehend the thief.
