The Land Rover LR3 - Off Road Comfort

December 30th, 2008 by Justin

If you are looking for a vehicle that offers off road capability, you can’t do much better than the Land Rover.  The Land Rover has been the de facto standard for some of the harshest off roading climates in the world and while there are plenty of vehicles that come with all wheel drive or 4×4 capability, they are usually nothing technologically close to the Land Rover in capability, functionality and reliability.  One of the vehicles that have definitely earned its name plate is the LR3.  The Land Rover LR3 is a boxy vehicle, but definitely offers plenty of performance, the ability to go almost anywhere and a comfort level perfect for everyday driving.

Land Rover LR3

The Land Rover LR3 Tech Specs
The Land Rover offers decent power, plenty of space, safety and off road capability in one vehicle.  To start out, the LR3 offers a very decent 4.4 liter V8 engine that produces a healthy 300 horsepower.  For those that have been tracking the LR3 this year’s model no longer offers the smaller and less powerful V6 engine. Matched to this engine is a six speed adaptive automatic transmission.  This vehicle like all Land Rovers has full time all wheel drive and the added capability of an electronic air suspension, a very useful hill decent control and Land Rover’s ultimate Terrain Response system.  No matter what obstacles your LR3 comes up against, with all the technology and engineering in the LR3, you should be able to overcome them with ease.

The LR3 seats 7 comfortably and offers a practical 3rd row that simply folds down for more space if needed.  Add into the mix plenty of amenities and safety features and the LR3 is a great all around vehicle.  The price for the LR3 ranges from about $44K to $54K.

Land Rover LRX

October 30th, 2008 by Justin

Land Rover has been creating top quality luxury vehicles for decades and while their vehicles offer luxury and quality, they are usually not the greenest available.  Recently, Land Rover created a concept car to change this reality about the company.  The LRX is what they created to ensure a full size 4×4 luxury vehicle that not only offers plenty of performance, but is quite green.  The Land Rover LRX comes as a hybrid diesel and it’s engine is also able to run on a variety of bio-diesel fuels.

Land Rover LRX

LRX Tech Specs
The LRX is definitely a start in moving towards a greener automobile.  This vehicle is reportedly able to get 50 miles to the gallon with its hybrid diesel.  While it only has a 2.0 liter engine, it should be noted that it offers an ingenious way to save energy.  It uses the electric engine solely when the vehicle is traveling speeds under 20 mph and uses both the diesel engine and electric engine for higher speeds.  In addition, the vehicle itself, while filled with luxuries and nice styling has a much smaller footprint.  Currently, the LRX is shorter than the Freelander 2 by about 5.9 inches and lower to the ground by about 8 inches, however this smaller footprint makes the vehicle much lighter and much better at fuel efficiency.  Everything regarding the LRX has been constructed to enable fuel efficiency and lower Co2 emissions.  Even the glass is made from a lightweight polycarbonate –reducing weight.

The LRX Interior
Inside the LRX are quite a few nice environmentally friendly touches.  For instance, the headliner and doors offer a nice suede material that is actually made from 100% recyclable plastic bottles, the leather is vegetable-tanned and the electronics are intuitive and of course includes an iPod docking station.  While this vehicle is still a concept vehicle, expect to see many of these innovations in future Land Rovers.

Top SUV’s for Off Roading

October 7th, 2008 by Justin

For those looking to maximize their fun off road, there are a few things to look for in an SUV.  Generally speaking, some of the features that make a great SUV for the trails include a very sturdy construction, a four wheel drive component with locking differential, a body on frame construction instead of the more popular and easier to produce- unibody construction and finally plenty of ground clearance.  If you are looking for a great SUV, here are two that definitely earn their marks.

Land Rover LR3
Land Rover has an impeccable reputation in the off road world.  If you are driving across the desert, through the Amazon or through the trails in America, the Land Rover will be the loyal soldier that one can rely on.  The Land Rover has a lot going for it including a decent ground clearance of 9.5 inches which makes it easy to crawl over rocks and logs.  It also include traction control settings perfect for switching between road and rock and a terrific Terrain Response feature to safely maximize your off road fun.

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4×4
For most off road enthusiasts nothing beats a Jeep and the Rubicon 4×4 definitely doesn’t disappoint.  The Rubicon offers a ground clearance of 10.2 inches with an approach angle of 44.3 degrees and a departure angle of 40.4 degrees that makes it pretty easy to overcome a wide range of obstacles found in almost any off road trail.  The Rubicon comes with a V6 engine with plenty of power.  It should also be noted that the Rubicon is way less expensive than many SUV’s and the aftermarket is incredible- making it easy and affordable to customize your Jeep.

The History Of Land Rover

June 6th, 2008 by Shenron

The Land Rover was first designed shortly after the end of World War II and it was based on the American made Jeep that had been used during the war.  The Jeep had impressed many people from different countries while in use during the war, not only because of its driving performance, but also because of its simplicity in construction and ease in maintenance and repair.  A simple to build and easy to maintain four wheel drive all terrain vehicle would be a great accomplishment for any company to build and market for non-military use.

The first Land Rover prototypes were constructed on Jeep made chassis.  The early models concentrated on a basic 4×4 model that included simplification of everything, including the 4 cylinder engine, so that repairs in the field would be easier to accomplish successfully.  In its early years, the colors available for Land Rovers were confined to what was available in military surplus paint supplies, it is for this reason that so many Land Rovers were painted varying shades of khaki and army green.

Although there were few changes in the basic design of both the engine and body of the Land Rover over the first few decades, eventually as it became more mass marketed alternate versions with more public friendly options and an electronically controlled 5 cylinder engine were constructed.  To this day, the British Army continues to use the simpler and easier to repair 4 cylinder version of the Land Rover.

During the 1960’s and 70’s, due to the well documented major upheaval in the British automotive industry, Land Rover became a part of different other companies at different times, eventually ending up being owned by American car manufacturer the Ford Motor Company.  Ford would eventually sell the combined assets of Land Rover and Jaguar to Indian automobile manufacturer Tata Motors in 2008.

The Land Rover continues to be one of the more sought after vehicles by four wheel drive enthusiasts.  The two main reasons for this are nostalgia for a classic automobile and one of the early all terrain vehicles as well as because of continued appreciation for the easy to maintain operation of the Land Rover.  With its long track record as a popular and reliable 4×4 vehicle, nothing in present day information indicates that the Land Rover will suddenly fall out of favor with all terrain vehicle enthusiasts now or in the future.
