Chevrolet S-10

July 5th, 2007 by shenron

The Chevrolet S-10 was one of Chevrolet’s longer lived models, lasting from 1982 until 2004 when it was replaced by the Colorado.  The S-10 was one of the more popular trucks that left the lines in the 80’s and 90’s - it has also been replaced by the Isuzu i-Series.  The first models of the Chevrolet S-10 featured engines that ranged from a measly 92HP 2.5L to a 180 HP V6 4.3L - not very impressive by standards of today.  However this first series, or generation, persisted all the way to 93, until being replaced.   There were other engines that were compatible with it, and optional, but the most powerful of them was the final year of production’s (93) Vortec 4.3, which gave the truck a nice 195 HP, and in some cases could jump it past 200 horses.  The vehicle also had a four door variant that was released in the early 90s, and finally, the next generation came out.

Angles sang, clouds parted, and a truck worthy of challenging its Ford rival rode in onto the scene, the Chevrolet S-10 came in packing a 4.3L V6 that left it with almost two hundred horses, along with a regular cab model, an extended cab model, and a regular cab long bed model - the fuel capacity was a good 19 gallons and it had either a four speed auto along with a four speed manual.  Greatly improved and capable this model lasted for ten years without any major revisions that weren’t cosmetic.  The Chevrolet S-10 was sold with two wheel or four wheel drive, and in the late 90’s SS packages were replaced by Xtreme packages.  Although the S-Series has finished production - they are still being assembled and sold in Brazil, and come with 2.8 Diesels - it is the truck that won’t die.  Because the engine size between the small block V8 and the Chevrolet S-10 are compatible it has become common for hot-rodders to “upgrade” the Chevrolet S-10 - giving it upwards of 300 or more horses.

Chevrolet SSR

July 5th, 2007 by shenron

The Chevrolet SSR is not quite a truck, but at the same time not quite an SUV - it happens to be both when you look at it.  Designed for a sleek appearance and based ion the GMT360 platform this mean machine can do many tasks while remaining to be a pile of metal that can launch itself through a glass window when need be - yes I am joking.  SSR stands for Super Sport Roadster and it is a convertible pickup truck produced between 03 and 06.  No plans to reintroduce the truck are, have been, or likely ever will be, announced.  In ten years time this little ditty will be collectable seeing that only about 24k ever made it off the line.  The power behind this vehicle is the Vortec 5300 V8 engine, or optionally you could bump up from that 5.3L to a much better and powerful 6.0L LS2 V8, giving you 390 horses under its strange looking hood.  The reason this vehicle proved to be so darn un-likeable had to be that it was overall disliked - seeing that sales dropped below expectations forcing layoffs at the SSR factory and losing jobs for folks - then the entire Lansing Craft Center seemed to have been shut down out of spite (it was the place this SSR was built).

Although the SSR wasn’t as popular as hoped, under the hood lies a sleeping powerhouse with the lovely LS2 V8 with modifications in the final production year - I guess they figured what the heck.  The last manuals were capable of 6 speed 400 horsepower fury, while the four speed auto was capable of just 5 horses under that at 395 - and judging by the late release of this modification it is fair to say that had they done it sooner, perhaps it would have been more popular or at least, desirable for the engine output alone.

Chevrolet Colorado

July 5th, 2007 by shenron

The Chevrolet Colorado is a mid-sized pickup truck with a good hauling capacity and an overall useful design, one of the tops anyways.  It was first introduced in 04 and comes in either a two door or a four door design with front engine real wheel drive along with four wheel drive, and it uses the GMT335 platform for its main makeup.  The Chevrolet Colorado comes loaded with either a 3.5L engine or a 2.8L engine - however for this year there are two new generation 2.9L or 3.7 L engines that provide more hauling and pulling power, along with a few new colors.  The vehicle is not quite as popular as its larger cousins but makes up for that in its ability to be median priced, and still being the highest selling unit in the Ford line - it is surpassed in sales by the Toyota Tacoma.  The Colorado offers both manual and automatic transmissions; with the automatic being a four speed and the manual a comfortable and common five speed.  There is also a sport suspension version available called the ZQ8.

It is interesting to note that the Colorado replaced the much beloved Chevrolet S10 and is based on the GMT355, while the GMT355 is based on the GMT345 - and that is what the Hummer H3 uses for its platform.  The GMT3555 has a current rumor surrounding it about future support for a greatly more powerful and enhanced V8 engine that would add additional horses to the Colorado, and give it a bump up above the competition.  Over all the Colorado is a very competent vehicle, capable of hauling most things and pulling trailers, and is good for someone who is not going to be making heavy hauls of major material - additionally the four door model is excellent for person and tool transportation for construction jobs or other necessities that need to be fulfilled.

Chevrolet Avalanche

July 5th, 2007 by shenron

The Chevrolet Avalanche is a recent truck design that was first hatched up back not too long ago, and later by 2001 they had decided to use the GMT8000 platform for the vehicle, being that the platform was also used at the time by the other more common trucks by Chevy - the Silverado.  Well off from the assembly line came this sport utility truck, the Chevrolet Avalanche comes as a four door truck with front engine read wheel drive, and four wheel drive.  It has a four speed automatic transmission and a 130 inch wheelbase - it is considered as a technicality as a full size pickup truck and it is indeed capable of hauling. Optionally you can choose between two engines, the 5.3 liter that has about 300 horses, but just under that or the much better and stronger 8.1L 325 horses engine, which greatly improves its hauling capability - this engine only came available just late last year.   One of the more interesting things about the Avalanche is the way in which you can fold a part of the bed into the back seat - giving more room for hauling.  The midgate design allows for basically conversion into a sleeper unit of sorts, with the size for two sleeper bags to be flopped own and use, while they remain protected from the weather - an excellent design for the avid camper and outdoors person.

Although the current design is popular, it has been discontinued for the next line of GMT900 truck platforms, which will see improved design and better features than the first generation of Avalanche vehicles.  The Avalanche still keeps its front design style derived from other GMT900s, however the midgate and integrated bed are something only it has, and this remains almost the same between the two generations - these newer trucks will be equipped with either a 320 or 366 horsepower engine that are 5.3L and 6.0L respectively.

Chevrolet Silverado (Overview)

July 5th, 2007 by shenron

The Silverado is one of the best selling trucks today, with a great reason as to why.  It is a good truck and a powerful truck, the Silverado has rivaled the Ford F-Series and can outclass it in a few categories.  The truck features both read and full wheel drive, with the Silverado being capable of hauling a whole ten thousand pounds.  The Silverado is of course, based on the GMT800, and it comes in various forms and makes.  If you’re looking for a truck to use for generally lighter trailers you should consider a Light-Duty Silverado, however if you need some extra pull, the Heavy Duty’s do their own bit of damage, in a comparative sense.  The Heavy Duty Silverado is capable of 325 horses with the right engine and each one can come in either a full cab or crew cab, with enough room to seat five people. The models are the Silverado 1500 Regular Cab, which is great for when you are just hauling, and are made with a variety of engines, ranging from 200 horses to 295 horses, make sure you know what you need.  The 1500 Extended cab lets you seat more folks, perfect for if you are needing help with what you’re hauling around.  Then there’s the 2500 (which is no longer produced) that has a 300 horse engine, also a good model.

About the HD’s, or Heavy Duty’s, they come in either the 1500HD the 2500HD or the Silverado 3500 HD models. The 1500 capable of 300 horses and hauling an amazingly huge 10k pounds along with being able to haul 3k in the bed of the truck, the 2500 is capable of 310 or 340 horses and has been able to haul a huge 16k pounds - along with also having 4k in the bed, and the 3500, by far the most powerful, can haul a whopping 16.7K along with 5.5K in the bed.  These trucks are built for power, and power is what they have in them.  They have all been to this point discontinued with the GMT800 series of trucks, and are now going to be replaced with the new GMT900’s.  These upgrades make it worth waiting to see what is new, or just waiting for the price to drop down on the 800’s.
