Fifth Wheel Travel Trailer
July 23rd, 2007 by Shenron
Fifth wheel travel trailers are almost the same as other travel trailers. They are called as such simply because of the kind of hitch needed to tow it, which is called a fifth wheel hitch. They are the strongest hitches in the market and used to haul really heavy loads such as livestock trailers and RVs.
Fifth wheel trailers have a special dual level construction where in the front part of the camper is above the bed of the truck. They have taller ceilings and more slide-out rooms. While the size of fifth wheel trailer might be intimidating, they are very easy to handle and are the most spacious RVs available.
They range from about 8,000 pounds to more than 18,000 pounds. Small fifth wheel models provide a full-time bed in the raised forward section. Though headroom varies considerably, most compact fifth wheels require you to stoop while using the front section. The larger models can give maximum living space including up to three slide-outs and standing room.
The raised front part of the trailer usually houses the master bedroom or the living room.
It usually has a large picture window on the rear providing great panoramic views. The fifth wheel travel trailer’s ability to be detached from the tow vehicle allows complete freedom on arrival at the camping site. You can then use the vehicle for other purpose like sightseeing or shopping for supplies.
A fifth wheel trailer offers people freedom from touring, camping, to vacation stays. They are ideal for weekend camping while having the usual home comforts. You can sleep, eat, shower, cook, and watch videos or movies in your fifth wheel, since all of these conveniences are built-in.
Other areas of the trailer extend outside the normal confines of the RV to make them more spacious. This is done with just a touch of a button.
A pickup truck or other suitable trucks are required to tow a fifth wheel trailer. It is necessary that your tow truck’s towing capacity can accommodate the weight of the fifth wheel, including liquids and personal effects. This is why larger fifth wheel requires super-duty pickups, and the largest ones need at least medium-duty RV haulers.
Because of the hitch design, towing a fifth wheel trailer is a lot easier and more stable than towing other types of RV. Hitch placement directly over the rear tires of the tow vehicle contributes to improve traction and handling.
A fifth wheel travel trailer is ideal for those who want maximum living space, easy towing, and reasonable price.
