Lowboy Semi-Trailers
October 1st, 2007 by Shenron
These lowboy semi-trailers are also referred to as a double-drop trailer. This is usually called upon when the shipment height actually matters when transporting certain cargo. The lowboy trailer offers a lot more headroom yet, and like the drop-deck, features a raised front deck, yet the middle part of the trailer known as the “well” can be as low as 22 to 24 inches giving it its shape. Shipment heights for the lowboy trailer allows shipment heights up to 11’6″, loading and unloading could be more difficult depending on the circumstances. The lowboy trailers are not as widely available as standard flatbeds and drop-deck trailers; causing prices for purchasing to increase heavily.
A lowboy trailer has a central storage and/or cargo section. The floor is situated at a lower level than the other floors at the front an drear storage sections. The first lift having upper and lower cargo platforms is located in the central cargo section, and a second lift is located in the rear section. The first lift it positioned so that its lower platform is level with the floor at the front section. Then the cargo is moved through the rear door, passed the rear section, and across the lower storage platform of the first lift and placed on the floor of the front section. If there is any other additional cargo that needs to be shipped it will be moved through the rear door into the second lift and this lift is thereafter raised, permitting this cargo to be placed on the upper storage platform of the lift. Also, any more cargo will be delivered through the rear door and loaded up into the rear section of the lowboy trailer. Hydraulic rams are used to raise the platform in the trailer upwards or downwards, managing which way it goes.
