The Ford Explorer Sport Trac is a mid sized pickup truck that is in the style of a four door pickup truck with a front engine and four wheel drive layout. The truck first hit the market in 2001 and was based and is still based on the Ford Explorer SUV. Currently the Ford Explorer Sport Trac is the middle sized truck for ford, since it is in between a ford F series truck and the Ford Ranger. It is very successful in terms of sales, as in its first year orders outpaced supply, forcing a waiting list that reached three months at its highest peak. The first one was built on the Ford Explorer’s chassis and had a five speed automatic or five speed manual transmission, and came with only the 4.0L Cologne V6 engine which produced 210 horsepower. The interior came in just one option and no carpeted floors, just rubber. The First Generation was meant to be a person transport and hauling capacity mid sized truck that fit in between the compacts and the full sized, which it has done with relative ease.
The update, which came in 2006, features several improvements along with more options and a better transmission. The new engine it can handle is the 4.6L Modular V8 which, at its peak, can pump out nearly 240 horses without modification – and the engine itself being able to produce higher if modified slightly (when used in the Ford Mustang the engine can produce 260 horses). The new transmission is a six speed 6R automatic and still has the five speed automatic. Since the Ford Explorer grew in size, so has the second set of Ford Explorer Sport Trac vehicles, giving it a better reinforced frame along with independent suspension for all four wheels. The two available models of the Ford Explorer Sport Trac are the XLT mid class, and the luxury Limited (which are carryovers from the Explorer).
